COSTUME DESIGNER

NOVEMBER 2024

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
Tacos LA Brooklyn is a satirical multilingual stage play written by Joel Ulloa and directed by Fidel Gomez.
The production explores themes of cultural appropriation, gentrification, and identity in Los Angeles, focusing on a Korean American character trying to turn his taco stand into a restaurant.
Crafting the overall visual concept for the costumes involved extensive research to ensure authentic representation. The costumes enhanced the visual and storytelling experience, earning recognition from STAGE ROW with the Best Production LA 2023 award.
The main challenge was accurately depicting the "Cholo Chicano Culture" universe, incorporating tattoos and accessories to bring characters to life, including special features for projections. Meaningful details, such as t-shirt prints with character-specific messages, were added to evoke audience connections. Lots and lots of fast changes required careful planning, layering, and organization!
