The American Mariachi
Location
LOS ANGELES THEATER CENTER, CALIFORNIA
Date
May 2024
Role
COSTUME DESIGNER
American Mariachi tells the story of young Mexican American women in the 1970s using extraordinary power of music to overcome adversity and battle sexism.
With a cast of 17 actors and musicians, this awarded production was both a thrilling and challenging project to design. Featuring traditional “trajes”, multiple eras with distinctive styles, and vivid flashbacks, it demanded meticulous attention to historical accuracy, cultural authenticity, and the unique aesthetics of the mariachi world. The rapid costume changes, body transformations, and wigs added to the complexity—making the creative process as dynamic and vibrant as the story itself. It was truly a fun and rewarding experience!
